Beginner Area Improvements

Calabogie is attracting more first time skiers, riders and school groups with an innovative approach to learning. Over the summer, our mountain crew redesigned the beginner bowl to create a learning academy that consists of four distinct areas.

Our signature Beginner Bowl remains the core learning centre. The exit from the carpet lift into the bowl has been re-landscaped so it’s easier to navigate. New skiers and riders can now simply step off the carpet lift and gradually slide into the bowl. This will make the ‘first step’ into skiing and riding an enjoyable experience.

A new beginner trail called Progression has been constructed at the west side of the carpet lift. Progression has been named for its function – it’s taller and a little steeper than the Beginner Bowl. Early skiers and riders will use Progression as an intermediate learning step to prepare for advancement to the chairlifts. Progression will help early riders and skiers to learn how to comfortably manage on steeper green terrain. By using progressive terrain and techniques, all new skiers and riders will know with confidence when they are ready for the chairlift and the mountain’s green trails. Progression also helps parents and instructors make decisions with students about their next steps.

The tubing park has been re-sloped. The changes in grade and terrain make the walk from the carpet lift to the entrance to the tubing lanes level and shorter. This will make it even easier to tube; and give tubers time for more runs. Don’t worry, the thrill of the tubing lanes has not been diminished.

The Mini Terrain Park has been upgraded this year with new features. These changes are being lead by our Freestyle Coaches and the leading members of the Freestyle Club. Watch for exciting freestyle terrain all over the mountain this year.

Collectively, all these changes put Calabogie at the leading edge of early skiing. Contrary to popular perception, Calabogie is not just a “Big Mountain”. We have a keen interest in developing early skiers and riders because they represent the future of our industry.
